Background

The first game in the Mario Kart series spanning 3 generation of Nintendo consoles to date. Eight characters are used from the Super Mario Bros games, letting the player control some characters for the first time, like Koopa Trooper, Bowser and Donkey Kong. The use of mode 7 was the key ingredient to the success of this game, producing 3D like visuals and a decent sense of speed.

Story

The Super Mario Kart Grand Prix is run by Lakitu, who controls all the races. They race one seater, metal pipe frame go carts, with two engine sizes in the form of 50cc or 100cc. Master the courses and you might make it to the 150cc championship. Each driver has different strengths and weaknesses through their individual driving styles.

Comments

Super Mario Kart provides lots of exciting races and great multiplayer fun with plenty of weapons to shoot down your mates. The tracks are of a good variety, and several game modes give good longevity. Highly recommended if you own a SNES.
